Higher Ground

Stevie Wonder the greatest to ever do it.

I remember…

The first time I became conscious of Stevie Wonder.

Maybe I was like… 12 the oldest.

We were on the way to my Nana’s house.

Sir Duke came on.

Naturally I’d heard the song before.

But I don’t think I’d ever felt it before.

Sir Duke… on the way to my Nana’s house to go run around the backyard, playing with my cousins.

In the midst of the summer.

Certain that it was the only song I listened to for the remainder of the week.

I wake up.

“The ‘c’ in that word makes an ‘s’ sound.”

My daughter is reading some anthropology textbook I bought about food.

I haven’t read it yet… but I’m taking it as a sign that my five year old decided to tackle it.

Something about this all makes me think of Golden Lady.

My daughters, my three little golden ladies.

So.. Golden Lady gets played. Followed by As.

All the records are boxed up.

Always the first thing that gets packed when we move.

I look forward to moving for the last time.
